Bangkok 2014 Day 1: To the Land of Smiles

Day 1: 3 May 2014 (Sat)

Our flight to Bangkok is at 5.35pm. Not a good time as by the time we reach, it would be already night time. A day is wasted. But this is the only time for departure by Scoot. Too bad. If you want to go there early in the morning, choose other airlines! But you can fly back by Scoot. Haha! :)

Changi Airport

We went to the airport very early at about 2.30pm, 3 hours before departure, to check-in early cos we wanted to explore the airport a bit. I didn't choose seats during booking, but seats are assigned during check-in for Scoot. After checking-in, we quickly went through the immigration because there are a lot to see inside.

We are at Changi Airport Terminal 2. As mum is a garden lover, I did my homework beforehand, there are 3 gardens inside the departure transit lounge. Airport Interactive Map

This is the Enchanted Garden at Level 2 on the left hand side of the departure hall.

This is the Orchid Garden and Koi Pond on the right hand side.

And my favourite has to be the rooftop Sunflower Garden at Level 3!

Not very big, but very well-maintained. Such a joy to see so many sunflowers!

Watch the planes fly.

After touring around, we went for a meal before proceeding to the gate. Quite a bit of walk, so always be there early.

Boarding the plane. This is a larger aircraft (3-4-3 seating) compare to my previous one on Jetstar to Hong Kong (3-3). Although we had the normal seats only, the space is large and the seat is more comfortable. The Jetstar one is very awkwardly aligned and hard to lean back.

Had the windows seat. Beautiful sunset! Phone not good enough to capture it.

Arriving at Bangkok

The flight took about 2 hours. We arrived on time at Suvarnabhumi Airport at about 8pm Singapore time or Bangkok time 7pm (1 hour slower) according to schedule. After clearing the immigration, got down to Level 1 where the taxi stand is (Airport Map).

There are 2 taxi counters outside exit 4 and 7 at Level 1 of the airport. The counters are in blue. I didn't take any photos but you can visit here for the photo and also detailed description of the airport (in Chinese). Queue up and tell the staff at the counter your hotel/destination. It's better to get the address in Thai beforehand. They will hand you a slip like this, in case you need to complain about any unfair charges.

Confirm with the driver again the destination and also insist the taxi driver to use the meter if he tries to ask for a flat fare which is usually higher. There were 2 toll charges along the way at 25baht and 50baht. Get ready cash first as you need to pay during the trip. We took less than an 1 hour to reach our hotel. The taxi fare 260baht + 50baht for surcharge (required if you take taxi from the airport) was paid to the driver. Total taxi fare was 385baht (~$14.70).

Quickly check-in to our hotel. The hotel deposit was 1500baht for 3 nights. Dumped our belongings there and important stuff in the safety deposit and off to MBK which was just opposite our hotel to settle our dinner. It was already 9pm and it was true from what we heard, the shops closed very early. The foodcourt at MBK already closed. We went to the first floor and found Nova Kitchen which serves both vegetarian and non-vegetarian food. So we ate our dinner here.

Mum's Pineapple fried rice. She said not bad.

My Seafood Pad Thai. Not that nice.

Forgot the individual price, but our meal summed up to be 242baht (~$9.25). Expensive and not satisfying too. There is a supermarket beside the restaurant. It was also closing. In fact by the time we finished, nearly before 10pm, the whole of MBK was already closing and lights were dim. We had to get out of the mall asap. But you know the place is huge and we are new to the place. There were some other people (must be tourists also) trying to find their way out. We followed them as they asked the staff along the way. Finally we were out! Phew!

There was a night market beside MBK still a lot of people. We looked around, bought some snacks and went back to our room. I bought bbq pork stick at 10baht each (~$0.39) outside our hotel cos didn't like my dinner mah. No photo. This was much better! Haha!

Our cosy bed for 3 nights! Will write more about the hotel in detail in the next post.

Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Siam. Free Wifi available. I skipped buying the SIM card as it's good enough as long as I have Wifi in the hotel. Wifi here was very fast too!

Bangkok 2014: Planning for the trip

Hello! I returned from my 4 day trip to Bangkok from 3-6 May! Never expected another trip so soon after Hong Kong last year as I am not a frequent traveller. The main reason for this trip was because I won $200 vouchers from Singapore's Scoot Airline! :D

The vouchers will be expiring in June, so I have been checking the fares and promotions by Scoot very frequently since January. Decided not to go too far and the nearest destination run by Scoot is Bangkok. I am bringing my Mum there, she had been to Bangkok about 10 years back in a tour group, and me have never been to Bangkok before. This time we will be going free & easy. All the planning will be done by me! Actually I really enjoy planning for trips, like deciding the itinerary, checking the different hotels and reading all the travel blogs. I do them even though I am not going anywhere. Haha!

Finally in late March, I confirmed my booking for the air tickets at a promotional fare of $26.10 each way (taxes excluded). I added extra 15kg check-in baggage for 1 person both ways at $20 each way. After all the taxes plus processing fee of $36*, the total price is $342.80. Minus the $200 vouchers I received, I only paid $142.80 for the air tickets for 2 persons! Great deal! :)

* You can also pay at the SingPost within 24 hours to avoid the processing fee (if you pay online using credit/debit cards).

After confirming the date, I have about 1 month to plan for the 4 day trip. Before this I have totally no idea what to do in Bangkok. Spend an entire month to read all about Bangkok, mostly blogs.

Some of the very useful food and travel blogs I read are:
http://reviews.noobcook.com/category/thailand/bangkok/
http://www.ellenaguan.com/search/label/Bangkok
http://www.passportchop.com/trip-itineraries/#bangkok-thailand
http://danielfooddiary.com/tag/bangkok/
http://foodiefc.blogspot.sg/search/label/~%20Travel%3A%20Thailand
http://aroimakmak.com/ (I discover this blog only after I returned)

If you can read Chinese, these 2 favourite travel blogs of mine are very informative too!
http://mylovelybluesky.com/tag/thailand/
http://lohas.pixnet.net/blog/category/1255090

As my mum is a vegetarian, finding vegetarian food for her is also in part of my planning. HappyCow is a wonderful website where you can find vegetarian food all over the world. Easy access to vegetarian food is one of my considerations when choosing a hotel.

Then comes to the selection of hotel. After roughly knowing where I will be visiting, I am looking for a hotel at the Siam area and walking distance to BTS station. My budget is less than $100 per night as I do not want to spend too much on accommodation. Bangkok hotels are really cheap and we can get quite good rooms with less than $100. My first choice is actually at Mercure Bangkok Siam. I have been checking the rates almost daily at Agoda website, hehe! The rates are roughly $70-80. I wait and wait to see if there is better deals and then suddenly the price becomes $90+ and no breakfast. Waited too long! Then I switch my target to Holiday Inn Express Bangkok Siam which is just few steps away from Mercure. The photos of the rooms look pretty good! The price is about $70+ with breakfast included. Agoda and Tripadvisor rating is quite high too. So confirm my booking with Agoda for 3 nights at $221.13 after taxes.

After settling the air tickets and hotel booking, I read several blogs going to the Maeklong Railway Market featured on travel shows very frequently. Really wanted to go there for the experience. Luckily the deal from Deal.com.sg in still going on. The Half-Day Damnoen Saduak Floating Market & Maeklong Railway Market tour is only at $26 per person which includes picking up from and to hotel and all charges included. Make the booking quickly too!

As only me and Mum are going, she isn't very fussy about where we are visiting, so I plan a very relaxing trip itinerary. Afterall free & easy is supposed to be free & easy. We will not be squeezing too many places and activities. We are considering about health and safety too, so we are taking special care not to go places that are too crowded and too far away.

Last thing is to pray for safety due to the political unrest in Bangkok for the past few months. We are really hoping for peace over there.

Hong Kong 2013 Day 5: Character Breakfast Buffet at Enchanted Garden

Day 5: 3 November 2013 (Sun)

We spent 1 night staying at the Hong Kong Disneyland Hotel. We were going to have the Character Breakfast Buffet at Enchanted Garden Restaurant in the morning. Woke up quite early, so we went around the hotel for photo-taking.

The hotel lobby area.

Toilet signs ;)

The outdoor area

The pool with a slide. The kids don't have time for this!

There's a Mickey Maze in this hotel!

The stairs leading to the maze.

Beautiful!

Panorama view of the hotel

Time to get back to the hotel for the Character Breakfast Buffet at Enchanted Garden Restaurant. There were 2 sessons for the buffet breakfast. We went in for the second session from 9.30-11am.

The range of food for the breakfast was excellent!

Bread and pastry

Mickey waffles and pancakes! Must take! :D

The western breakfast selections.

Congee and dim sum for the Asians.

Other appetizers and dishes.

Desserts and drinks.

My selection.

As we were enjoying our breakfast, some of the Disney Characters will go around from table to table for photo-taking sessions. That was the highlight of the buffet breakfast. Don't just focus on the food! Cos they come and go very fast!

After the breakfast, we checked out, left our luggages at the hotel and went back to Disneyland to complete as many rides as we can. :)

We left Disneyland at 5pm to catch our flight back. Fyi, Disneyland is only about 10-15 minutes away from airport by taxi and costs about HK$110-125. If you are going by public transport, you need to take MTR and change stations 2 times before transferring to Airport Express. So it is actually cheaper, faster and more convenient to travel by taxi between the Airport and Disneyland when travelling in groups of 2 and more.

Finally completed my Hong Kong trip last year. Here's a summary of all the posts written, tried to break into smaller sections to make it easier to blog. Not wanting to change this blog to a travel one. I know the baking posts are much lesser now. But I love to write down about my travels (though very few) so that I can remember my experience and also share with others at the same time. Looking forward to the next trip soon!
